Honestly, because of the location of the stadium in a fairly rural area outside of the city – you are best staying in the centre and having a few drinks before making your way out to the ground.Onkel Willy's Pub is more than just a funny name – it is a classic old fashioned German pub, with plenty of pub games such as pool and darts to keep you entertained. The staff are really welcoming and it's a great place to spend an hour or two.If the weather is nice then Rheinstrand Mainz is one of the best places in the city! Located on the riverfront, there are plenty of chairs and tables for people just to sit, relax and watch the world go bar in a really calming setting!Of course, no town is seemingly complete without a good old fashioned Irish Pub and The Porter House Irish Pub is one of the best in the city. With TV's showing all the pre-match build up, it's a great atmosphere and a good place to grab a drink or two.

Looking for a local bar with local fans? Then you have to go to the iconic "HaseKaste” pub which is very close to the stadium. Located in "Eugen-Salomon-Straße” you will find this neat, little fan pub serving great bar to all the football fans before and after a match. Be aware that it fills up pretty quickly around match day time. As the stadium is pretty far outside from the city center, it is hard to find any other lively spots within close distance to the arena. Another viable solution would be to visit some pubs in the main bar district close to the Rhine area.

Bars and the Opel Arena really aren't a good combination. The stadium is 4km out of town and nobody drinks here. What you can do, however, is tank up in the city centre and get the shuttle bus out, or take the long. If leisurely stroll to the stadium - 40 mins or so - with a few beers in hand, should the weather allow it. Drinking in the street is legal and positively encouraged in Germany, though relieving yourself and littering aren't, so remember to stay respectful. After all, the reason that there aren't any good pubs here is because normal folk have to live here every other day of the week.
