What to expect from the Olympiastadion crowd?

Olympiastadion is a venue in or near Berlin that is most often used for Soccer

The atmosphere inside the stadium really is terrific – you truly do get a sense of all the things that this stadium has seen, from Jesse Owens winning gold, to the Champions League matches that have been help here. Hertha fans do fill the huge stadium, and when you have over 70,000 fans singing and getting involved – it creates a wonderful experience. When the crowd sings, the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up. It's electric.

The football club Hertha BSC has some great fans. The only problem is that the stadium which fits more than 75000 people is huge, sometimes too big for not enough hardcore fans. On a normal match day you can expect around 45000 spectators. 10,000 'ultras' will continuously be chanting and cheering for their team. But the vast stadium doesn't create the magical atmosphere you might, for instance, find in Dortmund.

The Olympiastadion has often been criticised for a poor atmosphere, and it is largely true. This is one of the few German stadiums with an athletics track and the away sections are squirreled away in a far corner, so any sound generated just dissipates into the Berlin sky. Head for the Ostkurve, though, and let the Harlekins ultras give you a singing lesson as good as any in Germany. Learn their club song, Nur Nach Hause, set to the tune of Rod Stewart's "Sailing”. Avoid away colours, as they will not be well-received in some sections. The guest section is at the opposite end from the Hertha hardcore, so trouble is very rare. For non-football events, there will be no hassle at all.
