Hillsborough Stadium Sports Fan Tips

Hillsborough Stadium is a venue in or near Sheffield that is most often used for Soccer

How do I get to Hillsborough Stadium?

Being 3 miles from town, it's not the most accessible venue in the world, but you can make it work. Probably the simplest journey is to get the train into Sheffield Railway station (or walk there, if you live in Sheffield!) and catch a Supertram. They leave every ten minutes from the station, and take 30 minutes to arrive. Cost is £3.90 return. There are a few (unofficial) car parks along the A61 which you could use, or arrive super early for the limited parking available at the venue. You can also park right behind the stadium for £7 at the Wednesdayite car park.

Things to check out around Hillsborough Stadium?

Ever thought of combining a day of football with a night at the races? No? Well maybe you should! The Owlerton Greyhound Stadium is a quality racecourse just half a mile from Hillsborough with a stunning restaurant which is open all the time. From the comfort of your restaurant, you can watch the races unfold (through a huge glass window) and use the extensive TVs to catch replays and slow motion shots as you go. Bets are taken at and winning delivered to the table, so it really is a night of luxury!

Best Pubs around Hillsborough Stadium?

Right by the venue you've got both the Old Crown and the Park. Both thriving hot spots for home fans, you're best to get in there early if you want to get served promptly, and very early if you hope to grab yourself a couple seats!Described as a "proper pub” by some away fans, the New Barrack Tavern is warm, friendly and sells top quality ales and beers. There are a few other choices en route from town to the stadium, but it's more of a "see what you think” as you go kind of thing; New Barrack is the top dog for me.

What to expect from the Hillsborough Stadium crowd?

There's no shortage of fans who say that the Owls followers bring plenty of enthusiasm and energy to all of their away games, but that support has left much to be desired at their own ground. Often muted and almost disinterested in what's going on on the pitch, it can be a little boring, to be frank.Of course, when the right game comes along with some attacking football or skilful play, the crowd will get going, but it's definitely not every match.

Best Insider tip at Hillsborough Stadium?

Being 120 years old and witnessing footballing history, from successful campaigns to the traumatising disaster of 1989, Hillsborough has seen it all. Take the grounds tour of Hillsborough to learn about their history, culture and what makes the club. It's a perfect, short visit for fans who have travelled from far afield and who want to get to know their club a bit better. Even if you're a local and haven't ever visited, I assure you it's worth the trip.

Best Food and Drink at Hillsborough Stadium?

The best (read: only) food available at the stadium is a variety of pies (£3), sausage rolls (£2.60), burgers (£3.80) and hot dogs, also £3.80. It's decent enough grub, but nothing to write home about. The best drink in the venue is probably the Bulmers cider (£3.80) or Guinness (£3.80) though Carling, John Smiths, Kingston Press cider and wine are also available at similar prices.

Best restaurants near Hillsborough Stadium?

For me, there's nothing better than finishing a game and basically falling straight into a great restaurant. After a game at Hillsborough, that restaurant has to be The Riverside Café. It's simple British done brilliantly, with a few not-so-British classics like lasagne thrown in for good measure. If you are willing to walk ten minutes, then Two States is a fantastic Asian restaurant not far away. Good portions and mouth-watering taste!

Hillsborough Stadium seating?

Away supporters are usually allocated just under half of the capacity of the West Stand (3,700 seats). However, for a league match, the entire stand can be portioned out to the travelling fans: 8,000 total! The views are great, though some views from the West Stand are obscured by supporting pillars, which is a pain. Check online to see if yours are impeded before committing to buying!
