Detroit is a sketchy US city to say the least. However, they have cleaned up the areas around the stadium quite a bit in recent years. I would just stay close to the stadium and entertainment streets when coming to a game, especially at night. When you are driving don't stop and talk to the homeless or people in groups.

Detroit isn't the safest of cities but the areas around the ballpark have really cleaned up. There is a 4 or 5 block radius where you should feel relatively safe and then after that it is a crap-shoot.
