Best Bars near Melbourne Cricket Ground?

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the home of multiple teams in the Australian Football League, in addition to being a venue used for International Cricket and domestic T20 competitions like the BBL. "The G" is an outdoor arena primarily used for Australian Rules football games with a seating capacity of over 100,000. Located in Richmond, about 2km from Melbourne's city centre. This prestigious venue is the pride of Melbourne, which is a city that boasts of being "the sporting capital of Australia". It goes without saying that the MCG is a must-visit for any sports fan.

Where to start….there's the traditional pubs on Punt Road being The Royal and The Cricketer's Arms. Just down the road on Swan Street, Richmond is where you'll find the majority of pre and post-match crowds. The Precinct is located right across from Richmond Station and is one of the larger venues in the area. There's plenty of open spaces inside with heaps of screens broadcasting every sport imaginable. The food and drink menus are tailored for the crowd and you'll find all your pub favourites there. Allow about 10 minutes to walk up to the 'G'.

I really like the Corner hotel on Swan street. They have a big beer garden that gives it a relaxed, laid back vibe. You should be fine to find a space if you go before a game, but after the games get busy- especially night games. Leave the 'G' 5-10mins before the final siren if you want to be assured a space.

I am normally coming from the city so Transport Bar at Federation Square is perfect for me. Good mix of people in there with heaps of beers on tap. The parma's are enormous too if you want a feed. In the evenings there's normally either a band or DJ if you want to kick on. Three separate outdoor areas on the ground floor too when there's a bit of sun out too!

After watching a game at the 'G' it's not complete without having a postgame beer at the Victoria Hotel. To get there - it's an easy stroll up Exhibition St then left into Little Collins St. Once inside the hotel, go up the stairs and you can either have a seat at Vic's Bar or kick back in the lounge area. If you're lucky, someone might be playing the grand piano.
