The downtown area has been cleaned up but it is still not that great and I wouldn't venture many blocks in either way from the stadium. There are police monitoring the area but just walk in a group and get to where you are going fast.

Detroit is still Detroit even though they have cleaned up things around the stadiums. I would suggest going in groups to bars and restaurants and try not to stay out past midnight.
